Georgia, shy and soulful

Georgia’s story isn’t about treats and belly rubs. It’s about getting lost…and finding your way back.

Georgia came to Wisconsin from Mississippi, shy and soulful, with a look in her eyes that said, “I’ve seen things, but I’m still standing.” Georgia didn’t fill her new home with noise — she filled it with calm. Her unassuming presence brought comfort and healing to a heart that needed it most. Her journey from uncertainty to quiet confidence is a testament to the power of patience and love.

Georgia's story. It isn't pretty. Georgia’s path in life is paved with unimaginable pain, distress and rejection. Rescue saved Georgia’s life more than once, literally. Her birthday is a mystery. Her true name, if indeed she had been given one, is also a mystery for which an answer will never be known.

The first time she was tossed out and abandoned, she was little more than a puppy. Pitiful is the kindest description of her condition when she was found. Her dirty body was peppered with more than 100 bite wounds, many of which were infected; her jaw was ripped open, and she was covered with fleas and ticks. She was skin and bones. The probability she had been used as a bait dog is likely.

Alone, injured and wandering, someone saw Georgia. Hopeful to lure Georgia from hiding, a rescuer placed food and water near where she had been spotted. Moments before the rescuer was about to leave, Georgia walked from waist-high bushes, straight to the woman, and laid her head in the woman’s hands. Her rescuer gave her the promise of safety, the promise of love, and she gave her a name.

Georgia received veterinary care for her injuries, recovered, and stayed with the rescuer as a foster, waiting for her forever home. Happily, she was adopted. Sadly, happily-ever-after came to an abrupt ending at the hands of an unkind adopter. Georgia was surrendered and returned to her foster family. After the failed adoption, someone else chose her for theirs. Again she was let down; the adopters decided they wanted a child instead of a dog  Georgia was abandoned to fend for herself, wandering and alone.

Once more she was rescued. Once again she was safe in the home of her foster family — the wonderful folks who had, by now, saved her life three times. Again Georgia waited, for more than a year, hopeful to find that one person who would give her the life she deserved. It was pure happenstance (or was it fate?) when she captured the heart of someone who needed her as much as she needed them. It was a long journey to happily-ever-after in miles, and in emotion, but her fate was sealed. Georgia found her Person. She was finally loved, wholly and completely. And she met her best friend, Murphy!

Murphy’s Description of Georgia

"Let me tell you about my pal, Georgia. Don’t let her pirate’s patch fool you!

She’s gentle as sunshine, and to me, she’s the bravest girl I’ve ever known.

I showed Georgia how to play. How to trust. That not all dogs are mean.

That even a fancy-looking guy can make a really great friend!

Georgia has learned that second chances are real

and the world isn’t always a cold and scary place.

If I’m the voice in our story, Georgia’s the heart,

and together we’ve seen more than most dogs ever dream of."
